MONICA ROSAMUND PENN (nee Rochard)

Monica passed away peacefully on August 10 in her 94th year. She is predeceased by her husband Fred, her brother Bruce and parents Gladys and Everard Rochard. Monica will be lovingly remembered by her children, Bruce (Christine) Richard and Stephen. She will be missed by her grandchildren Sherri (Paul) Snaith, Jessica, Adam and Jason Penn and her two great grandchildren Bryce and William Snaith.

Monica was born in Livingstone Northern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) to Gladys and Everard Rochard who moved there from England to farm and where her father was part of the police force. Monica and her brother Bruce led an interesting life in Northern Rhodesia where she attended boarding school and then went back to England when she was eleven years old. After graduating high school she studied at the Sladex School of Design where she tried her hand at dress designing but stopped because of the Second World War. From there she trained as a nurse and worked during the war where she met her husband Fred in 1944.

Monica came to Canada as a war bride and went back and forth between England and Canada for several years. During this period she trained as a mid-wife and went on to work in East London delivering hundreds of babies, mostly in the east end of London.

She moved to Petawawa around 1957 while Fred was stationed in Germany which was her main home until after Fred's passing in 2003.

Monica moved to St. Hilda's Retirement home where she resided until just a few weeks before her death. While there she was very involved in the church and prayer groups and made many friends.

During her life Monica kept in contact with her family in England and was a prolific letter writer. She is remembered by her niece and nephew Susan and Michael Rochard and many cousins. She also enjoyed writing poetry and was a life-long believer in taking care of the animals and donated money to several groups that fought for animal rights. While in Petawawa she always made sure that the birds, squirrels, chipmunks and raccoons were well fed. Her great love was her last dog "Lucky Boy" and her numerous cats.

Monica will be remembered as a caring and gentle person and will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.

Special thanks go to all of the ladies who helped look after Monica in her final days. We don’t know what we would have done without you.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Humane Society.

Memorial Service

McDougall & Brown Funeral Home- Eglinton Chapel
1812 Eglinton Avenue West Toronto Ontario M6E 2H6
Monday, 24 Aug 2015 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
